My brother spent much of his life dreaming. He grew up in a poor working-class environment and often imagined becoming a world-famous restorer, travelling, repairing cathedrals and becoming richand that his father, who had disappeared, would return and love him. None of these dreams came true. Everything begins with a death: at the age of 38, douard Louiss older brother, a severe alcoholic, is found dead on the floor of his small studio flat. After years of avoiding any contact with his violent, homophobic and heartless brother, toward whom he felt an insurmountable aversion, the writer sets out to investigate the causes of his collapse, discovering above all what he had not previously known about him. Collapse is douard Louiss darkest book. Confronted with death, he can no longer rely on sociology alone when examining an individuals fate, and turns instead to psychology and intimacy. The result is a novel with the dimensions of an ancient tragedya story of an inevitable downfall caused by a chain of family, social and psychological connections.
