The mountain zebra is well adapted to moving through mountainous areas. It lives in small herds led by one male. Females may come into heat several times a year and carry their young for about a year. A foal can stand up one hour after birth. Young males form new herds by leading several females away from their original herd. Mountain zebras reach approximately 1.2 to 1.3 metres at the withers, measure up to 2.2 metres in length and can weigh up to 365 kg. They live for 30 to 40 years in captivity and 20 to 25 years in the wild.
