Z kroniky dobrodrustv Doyle Arthur Conan (2013)

This Czech-language collection presents Scottish writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, best known as the creator of the immortal detective Sherlock Holmes, as an author of adventure stories. His experiences as a doctor, practising spiritualist, lay preacher, historian, war correspondent, politician and promoter of sport all find their way into these tales. As a superb storyteller, Doyle discovers excitement not only in the boxing ring or on the battlefield, but also in seemingly calmer areas such as scientific research and social life. His shorter works introduce a colourful range of characters, while beneath their popular portrayals of courageous men, Doyle mocks pompous, self-confident fools and skilfully parodies various literary genres. His indulgent humour may be undervalued in our literary environment, but it reinforces the importance of unassuming heroism, a sense of honour and strength of characterqualities that remain relevant in every age, especially our own.
