Wuthering Heights Bronteov Emily (1997)

With an introduction and notes by John S. Whitley of the University of Sussex, this novel tells the wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherines father. After Mr Earnshaws death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherines brother Hindley and, wrongly believing that Catherine does not return his love, leaves Wuthering Heights. Years later he returns as a wealthy and polished man and proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of its vision make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.
