Inspector Haze and Lord Redmond must discover how a young chaplain came to be in a freshly dug grave that was intended for someone else. The unfortunate clergyman, who arrived in the English village of Upper Finchley only recently, was regarded by his family and acquaintances as a kind-hearted saint devoted entirely to God and good deeds.
