Tiempos recios Llosa Mario Vargas (2019)

This novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is a story of political conspiracies and conflicting interests during the Cold War. Guatemala, 1954: the military coup led by Carlos Castillo Armas and supported by the United States through the CIA overthrows the government of Jacobo rbenz. Behind this violent act lies a lie presented as truth, which changes the course of Latin America: Eisenhowers government accuses rbenz of encouraging the spread of Soviet communism across the continent. Set during the Cold War, the novel explores international conspiracies and clashing interests whose echoes are still heard today. It involves several countries, and some of the persecutors eventually become victims of the very plot they helped to create. Connected with the acclaimed The Feast of the Goat, the novel combines reality with two kinds of fiction: a narrators free recreation of characters and events, and the fiction devised by those who sought to control a continents politics and economy by manipulating its history.
