This family saga, with contents in Czech, is set in the Caucasian republics of present-day Russia and unfolds across two periods: the Soviet era and the 1990s after the collapse of the USSR. It begins with Naa, a widowed restaurant owner, and her adult grandson Denis, who works as an unlicensed taxi driver. The story then returns to the Soviet period, following Naas marriage to Alim, who takes her from Moscow, where he was completing his military service, to the Caucasus. She works in the local library but does not seem to belong among the people there, while her husband regularly seeks solitude in the nearby mountains. They have two daughters, whose stories the novel follows. The author offers a realistic portrayal of life in unusual places during a difficult period.
