This richly illustrated photographic travel book reveals the secrets of the isolated Socotra archipelago in the northwestern Indian Ocean, a place visited relatively rarely by Europeans. While most visitors admire Socotras endemic nature on the surface, traveler Michal Hejna and his colleagues Markta Jakovenko and Martin Novk repeatedly headed in the opposite directiondown beneath the islands surface. During three caving expeditions, the Czech explorers spent almost two months on Socotra and take readers to places rarely visited: its hidden, little-explored underground world. Socotra is an isolated archipelago in the northwestern Indian Ocean, about 350 km south of the Arabian Peninsula, and forms part of Yemen. The main island of Socotra is approximately 130 km long and up to 35 km wide. Around 50,00060,000 people live there, mainly in coastal towns, with about half of them in the capital, Hadibo. Its long isolation has allowed many endemic plant and animal species to develop, earning Socotra the nickname the Galpagos of the Indian Ocean. In 2008, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The contents are in Czech.
