Selected Stories Chekhov Anton (1996)

With an introduction and notes by Joe Andrew, Professor of Russian Literature at Keele University, this collection presents some of Anton Chekhovs earliest and shortest comic sketches alongside examples of his mature work. Widely regarded as one of the greatest short-story writers, Chekhov creates stories in which action and drama are implied rather than openly described, leaving much to the readers imagination. The doctor-turned-writer shows compassion for human suffering and misfortune while finding the comical, even farcical, aspects of the human condition. He depicts life with unwavering honesty and truthfulness, beneath which a clear moral sense can be detected.
