Sebastian Kneipp is renowned as the father of hydrotherapy, but his knowledge of herbal remedies, the herbs he recommended for the home and his household first-aid kit are less well known. Alongside other remedies, this kit contains apple cider vinegar, described as a versatile healing agent that supports digestion, disinfects and activates metabolism by killing disease-causing germs. The book also discusses sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, which can bind excess acids, as well as loess deposits from the Ice Age, which are rich in minerals and can be used internally and externally. A distinctive part of Kneipps herbal treatment is dried grass, whose variety means that it contains numerous active substances, essential oils, tannins, coumarins, resins and natural colourants. The experience of hard-working country people is also presented: they found that sleeping in hay acted as an elixir of youth and could relieve or even completely eliminate various aches overnight. Cabbage, known as the doctor of the poor, became particularly famous during Kneipps era, and this book, arranged as a guide through the whole year, includes several interesting recipes for preparing it. Another important contribution by Kneipp is two herbal mixtures called Mole, which serve to support digestion. The contents are in Czech.
