This text-and-photography guide explores 165 castles, chteaux, ruins and other well-known as well as overlooked sites in the northern part of Lower Austria, the Waldviertel and Weinviertel regions. The first volume in a guide series about Austrian castles and ruins focuses on their current condition and practical information based on the authors travels and personal experience. It includes all castles in the area and their ruins where substantial above-ground masonry survives. Among the chteaux that developed from medieval castles, it primarily features those that have retained a partially fortified appearance, are architecturally distinctive and are accessible to ordinary visitors to some degree, at least for viewing from outside. The selection is complemented by the best-known fortified monasteries and churches, as well as the ruins of religious monuments.
