When horror writer Thad McAlister begins writing his latest book, based on the witch trials in Massachusetts, the words flow effortlessly. Page after page fills with the deeds of the most terrifying character his imagination has ever created, and he believes he is working on the masterpiece that will make him a legend of the genre. But is it really fiction? Thad has unwittingly opened a door to a world that will soon threaten the lives of those closest to him. She wants to return. At home, his wife struggles to keep their family alive while secretly wondering whether she caused it all herself through a bargain she made long ago. The novel, in Czech, also includes an excerpt from the diary of Clayton Stone, dated 1692, describing the interrogation of an unnamed woman accused of witchcraft in Shadow Cove. Despite her imprisonment and miserable condition, she refuses to confess or reveal her name, and watches her accusers with eyes of the deepest blue.
