Prague in the Heart – 189 Stories from the City and its People Fukov Renta (2015)

This collection presents 189 true stories of events that have taken place in Prague over the past two hundred years, showing that its recent history is no less dramatic and complex than the medieval era. Its residents have included Franz Kafka, Jaroslav Seifert, Bohumil Hrabal, Jaroslav Haek, Jan Patoka, Ji Dienstbier and Vclav Havel. Occupying armies marched through the city, a battle took place for Czechoslovak Radio in the Vinohrady district, Czech patriots were executed in Kobylisy, dissidents were detained at Ruzyn and a Reich Protector was assassinated in Prague. Former industrial districts such as Smchov, Karln and Libe also record the history of the Industrial Age, when poverty existed alongside achievement, progress and hope for a better future. This is not an exhaustive historical study, but a remarkable literary statement by an author who loves her city.
