Povdky Rais Karel Vclav (2013)

This Czech-language hardcover collection presents Karel Vclav Rais, a classic of Czech realism, as an original writer of many different facets: a humorous idyllist who respects rural traditions, a critical realist intensely concerned with the clash between the disappearing village world and modern industrial civilization, and a thoroughly modern author able to find new approaches to emerging social problems. His stories portray not only the idyllic face of the Czech countryside, but also its darker side, including greed, insensitivity and selfishness. The selection is drawn from Raiss collections Vminki (1891), Horsk koeny (1892) and Potmchu (1892).
