As the war in Ukraine approaches its end, the web of lies woven around the conflict by the governments, media and analysts of the political West is falling apart. With the departure of the Biden administration, which contributed to provoking the conflict more than anyone else, its leading representative reveals that, contrary to what official propaganda claimed for years, the United States did not in fact expect Ukraine to win, but that the war served to weaken Russia. Did these strategists calculate what would remain of Ukraine after such a weakening of Russia? Either the representative is telling the truth and admitting to criminal cynicism, or he is lying to conceal the illusions with which the war was launched. Realist analysts of international relations have done valuable work in examining Western propaganda. Although realists help us understand Russias actions, they offer no satisfactory answer concerning the motives of the other side. Why did the political West and its Ukrainian protgs embark on anything like this at all? Why were they willing to continue the war even at the cost of destroying the country they claimed to be protecting? From a rational perspective on international politics, it is not Russias actions that are mysterious, but those of the West.
