Piruety Waldenov Tillie (2021)

This Czech-language graphic memoir follows a talented young figure skater who wins competitions but hates the relentless routine. For ten years, skating is her identity and a refuge from school stress, bullying and problems at home. After moving to a new school, discovering art and falling in love with a girl, she begins to question everything. In ten chapters named after figure-skating elements, Tillie Walden looks back at the hard work and lifestyle the sport demanded. Intimate and unembellished, the memoir explores adolescence, loneliness and the discovery of ones sexuality, and established Waldens career in comics. She began drawing it as a teenager and, at the age of 22, became one of the youngest recipients of the prestigious Will Eisner Award.
