Pet Emezi Akwaeke (2019)

How do you save the world from monsters if no one will admit they exist? The children of Lucille are taught that monsters no longer exist, and Jam has grown up with this lesson, surrounded by her devoted parents and her best friend, Redemption. But when a creature made of horns, colours, and claws emerges from one of her mothers paintings through a drop of Jams blood, she must reconsider what she has been told. The creature calls itself Pet and has come to hunt a monster. When the shadow of something grim appears in Redemptions house, Jam must fight to protect her best friend and uncover the truth. In this young adult debut, Akwaeke Emezi asks difficult questions about the choices a young person can make when the adults around them are in denial. The book combines fantasy, dystopian drama, political commentary, and a coming-of-age story.
