Premature birth is a serious problem from both medical and socioeconomic perspectives. The subject is divided into two basic areas: spontaneous premature birth and indicated premature birth, most often resulting from maternal illness or complications affecting the fetus. This book provides comprehensive information on the causes, clinical presentation, management, prediction and prevention of spontaneous premature birth. It also offers an essential overview of the conditions that lead to indicated premature birth, including pre-eclampsia, multiple pregnancy, fetal growth restriction and thrombotic microangiopathies. Neonatological aspects of care are also covered, and individual chapters discuss the latest research findings. Although primary prevention of premature birth does not yet exist, rapid developments in research are bringing various options for secondary prevention and increasingly effective, rational treatment approaches. The book presents current approaches to these topics in everyday practice, as well as possible future developments in research and care.
