This Czech-language second edition contains ten essays on the development of the human brain before birth and during infancy, toddlerhood, the preschool and school years, including adolescence. Frantiek Koukolk explores the deep evolutionary roots of human mental functions, the extent to which children know more than previously imagined even before birth and from their earliest moments, and the development of inner life through the external environment, especially the bond between young children and their mothers. He also discusses discoveries demonstrating the connection between empathy, mentalisation and self-awareness as foundations of humanity. The revised edition combines new findings with earlier knowledge, removes superseded material and expands every chapter, with special attention to intelligence, the development of the self, and the relationship between the individual and the group.
