This Czech-language memoir by Claude Lanzmann is a multifaceted narrative that combines a diary of his emotional life, travel notes, recollections of his wartime experiences and an examination of French intellectual life in the third quarter of the twentieth century. The filmmaker also emerges as an individual writer and thinker, portraying a man in search of existential adventure and deeply devoted to the causes for which he fought. The book presents Lanzmann in unexpected roles: as a young, unruly resistance fighter and passionate student, a daring reporter in East Berlin, and, above all, a figure who helped shape the intellectual currents of his time as a contributor to Les Temps modernes, an active participant in the Algerian independence movement and a chronicler of the young state of Israel. It also follows him as the creator of his lifes work on the genocide of the Jews, the film Shoah. The final section of this extensive personal account describes the ten-year making of the film and reflects on perseverance, the search for truth and the memory of humanity. The contents are in Czech.
