One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This (2026)

In this nonfiction book, Omar El Akkad examines what it means to live in a West that betrays its professed values. Drawing on his experiences as an immigrant, journalist, U.S. citizen and father, he reflects on the War on Terror, Ferguson, climate change, Black Lives Matter protests and the destruction in Gaza. El Akkad describes his painful realization that the Wests promises of freedom and justice do not extend equally to everyone, particularly people outside the boundaries of privilege. The book chronicles his moral struggle to preserve a sense of possibility in a time of carnage and serves as a deeply personal farewell to the ideals he once believed the West represented. It also considers the consequences of this rupture in families, on college campuses and in public life, and asks what it means to seek something better than the world that has been offered.
