Number-Building Activity Set – Zeros and Digits

This set of 10 number-building activity aids is designed for 10 pupils and is suitable for the second half of fourth grade and for fifth grade. Pupils cut the strip of zeros into two parts for forming natural and decimal numbers, and cut out the individual digits. The activity helps them correctly construct, read and write large and decimal numbers, understand place values, and work with numbers containing several zeros at the end or in the middle. Suggested activities include naming the place values from the basic units and identifying them using the zeros; constructing numbers from given units, tens and thousands and reading them aloud; determining how many zeros a number contains and where they occur; replacing selected place-value digits and recording the resulting numbers; increasing or decreasing numbers by 1, 10, 100 or larger amounts; constructing different numbers from the same digits, including the smallest four-digit and largest five-digit numbers; and assembling multi-digit numbers dictated by the teacher, then reading them and identifying the value of each digit, including in varying order. Each pupil works with their own aid, allowing the teacher to monitor the work and correct mistakes easily.
