The novel follows three longtime friends, each leading a very different life. Agta appears to enjoy a happy marriage with Jon and their two sons, while childless Klra seems carefree but compensates for her unspoken problems by changing partners and overeating. After divorcing her husband, Anka looks after her twins and gradually convinces those around her that she does not need a man in her life. Their friendship appears strong and lasting until Agta begins receiving anonymous messages claiming that Jon is unfaithful. Klra withdraws as an unhealthy diet causes her to suffer a psychological collapse and behave with hostility, while Anna keeps a secret she has no intention of sharing.
