This fascinating novel combines mysterious elements with dark family secrets that can lead as far as murder. Herbalist Apolena lives in a forest clearing and treats people from the surrounding area, but her own life is difficult and painful. Afraid and desperate, she misuses her healing skills several times, leading to a tragic event in which her two daughters die. Apolena curses those responsible for their deaths, but soon regrets what she has done. Many decades later, a young teacher named Anna moves back to her native village and renews her friendship with her childhood companions Lucie, Marek and Adam. Yet their fates seem to be cursed.
