This Czech-language book explores selected interesting metro systems around the world, examining the routes, vehicles and architecture of transport structures. It includes a brief historical introduction and a technical description of the metro system in each country, as well as an overview of all the world’s underground railways. The book distinguishes traditional metro systems from light rail lines, exclusively surface routes sometimes also called metros, and combined tram-train systems, where only part of the line runs underground and the trains are compatible with ordinary tram networks. Traditional metros operate on their own infrastructure with their own control systems. The history of underground railways begins with London’s first line in 1863, followed by Budapest and Glasgow in 1896, while the current expansion boom is taking place in China and India.
