The Pavel Haas Quartet performs Antonn Dvoks Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81, with pianist Boris Giltburg, and String Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 97, with violist Pavel Nikl. Seven years after its acclaimed recording of Dvoks quartets, the quartet returns to the composer with two distinguished guests: Giltburg, winner of the 2013 Queen Elisabeth Competition, and Nikl, a founding member of the Pavel Haas Quartet. Dvok composed his Second Piano Quintet at his beloved summer residence in Vysok in late summer 1887; critic Eduard Hanslick described it as one of the composers finest works. The String Quintet, written six years later, represents a very different Dvok. It was his third composition created on the American continent, drawing partly on music of the Iroquois people that he encountered in Spillville in 1893. The third movement is based on a theme he considered as a possible new American anthem. The Pavel Haas Quartet brings an intimate understanding of Dvoks music, reaching to its very heart.
