This book presents the work of Clement of Alexandria, a Greek Christian author who lived approximately from 150 to 215 AD and devoted his life to bringing the biblical message closer to the philosophically educated readers of his time. In addition to the Stromata, intended mainly for more advanced readers, he wrote shorter works aimed at those interested in the Christian faith or providing instruction for new Christians. Which Rich Man Can Be Saved? belongs to this category. It offers the first Christian interpretation of the Gospel passage concerning the calling of a rich man. Clements commentary unusually draws on the Gospel according to Mark. He explains Jesus words, Go and sell all that you have, not as a command to abandon material wealth, but as a call to detach the soul from its passions. The work bears witness to the coexistence of rich and poor Christians in Alexandria during the second half of the second century and, alongside the question of whether the wealthy belong in the church community, seeks to enter the debate on penitential practice of the period. It also includes a non-canonical tradition about the apostle John, which serves as a concluding example. The contents are in Czech.
