This Czech-language book examines the relationship between comics and print advertising, tracing how picture strips were used to promote various products and services from 1900, the first documented appearance of advertising in this form, through the dynamic 1990s. Following the success of History of 20th-Century Czechoslovak Comics, half of that books authorial team focuses here on a specific area of domestic comic production. The richly illustrated volume, with an extensive picture supplement, recalls numerous remarkable yet forgotten advertising-comic phenomena created by both the leading comic artists of their time and experienced commercial graphic designers. It also explores the various contexts in which comics and advertising were combined, their contemporary professional reception, and the non-comic promotional work of major figures who created advertising comics, from Josef Lada and Ondej Sekora to Kja Saudek and Jaroslav Nmeek.
