This Czech-language novel tells a captivating story about the power of love and truth, determination and courage, set at the end of the Victorian era in Riccall Hall and York, the capital of Yorkshire. Evelyn Seaton, the daughter of a baron whose irresponsible behaviour leaves her and her mother destitute, is forced to leave their beloved estate because of enormous debts and seek refuge with her great-aunt in York. Unable to accept their fall from high society, Evelyn secretly finds work at Mr Mortons bookshop, to the delight of both her and its owner. She is not the only applicant, however. Her rival is William, a charming but mysterious writer who hides secrets of his own. Evelyn and William are afraid to trust each other, but every heart is a doorway and every story waits to be told. Can they turn the page on their story and find the courage to write the next chapter?
