In Eastern Bohemia at the end of the sixteenth century, Jan, the last descendant of the lords of Zho, lives in a castle to which his younger brother Vilms French widow arrives to claim her inheritance. The brothers were close from childhood, but fell out when Vilm left for France to support King Henry IV of Navarre. Despite his brothers objections, he married there and soon died on the battlefield. Jan is tormented by guilt over their bitter parting and faces financial difficulties after the cost of the military campaign and Vilms unexpected marriage severely depleted the family treasury. The widows arrival heightens the already tense situation. The snow-covered end of the world is punishment enough for the young Frenchwoman, who hoped to find a new home but encounters only coldness and rejection. Someone soon tries to poison her, and her only protector is Vilms lawyer Vclav Leick, who attempts to discover the culprit. When plague breaks out in the region, Vilms numerous relatives also seek refuge at the castle. Tense family relationships and forced cohabitation bring further problems, and now not only property but also lives are at stake.
