Miners arrive in the new settlement from the other side of the mountains, accompanied by people seeking a livelihood, though not all of them honestly. Shortly after Ji Adams arrival, the innkeeper Margold is murdered. The crime initially appears ordinary, but witnesses speak of two demons. It soon emerges that a similar murder took place two days earlier, when a master butcher died, and another killing follows soon afterward.
