Illuminations Rimbaud Arthur (2018)

Arthur Rimbaud’s Illuminations, first published in 1886, changed the language of poetry and is here reissued as a Carcanet Classic. John Ashbery’s virtuosically original translation brings Rimbaud’s visions alive. Ashbery describes the book’s crystalline jumble as still emitting pulses of energy: If we are absolutely modernand we areits because Rimbaud commanded us to be. His translation conveys the kaleidoscopic dazzle of the original, from a Splendide Hotel built amid the tangled heap of ice floes and the polar night to the Witch who will never want to tell us what she knows, and which we do not know.
