This Czech-language book examines imperfections in materials, workmanship and other defective components involved in constructing roof structures with tiled coverings. Most of the examples come from Marek Novotns expert and forensic work, which he has carried out since 1999, giving him access to examples from the long history of defects and failures in this area of construction. Although it is impossible to compile a complete list, the book presents the dominant problems in individual categories, with their representation reflecting how frequently the various coverings are used in the Czech Republic. This does not mean that any particular type of covering is disadvantaged in use; it simply needs to be approached with respect for the risks it entails. The book is a collection of specific defects and failures in tiled coverings, intended to highlight the risks associated with constructing pitched roofs. Most of these problems arise from failure to follow general, technical or trade rules rather than from material defects, which are less common today but cannot be entirely ruled out. The author has devoted his life to teaching and has found that people learn best from negative examplesby seeing what should not be done. The book is therefore designed as a lesson drawn from risky situations, not as an attempt to identify specific culprits. Its aim is to show the dead ends that should be avoided.
