During the Grand National, a murder takes place: former jockey Nicholas Foxton watches his colleague Herb Kovak being cold-bloodedly shot only a few steps away. The killer vanishes into the crowd, immediately prompting speculation that the murder was part of a gang war. Nicholas refuses to believe the sensational theories, but it soon becomes clear that his seemingly carefree friend most likely led a double life. He also appointed Nicholas as the executor of his will. The inheritance he left him comes at an astonishingly high price.
