Hansel & Gretel: A Nightmare in Eight Scenes Armitage Simon (2023)

Simon Armitage turns the story of Hansel and Gretel into a darkly glittering fairy tale for grown-ups. In vivid and trenchant language, he gives the tale known from the Brothers Grimm a contemporary twist. This is a twenty-first-century story concerned with poverty and hunger, war and flight, and a shifting dystopian landscape where nothing is quite as it seems. Text and illustration fuse beautifully to summon a nightmarish vision that nonetheless contains humour and humanity, along with the possibility of a more hopeful future.
