GA-I-SU-RA Geislerov Ester (2026)

The title is a Japanese transcription of the name Geisler, as it would be pronounced by Japanese speakers. Through carefully selected characters found on the calligraphy seals of Petr Geisler (19492009), the publication opens up the remarkably rich story of a Czech Japanologist, calligrapher, translator, journalist and photographer who devoted part of his life to Japan. The 2026 exhibition GA-I-SU-RA captured, in the most comprehensive form to date, the scope and range of the work of an artist whose activities perfectly connected two geographically distant and culturally different, yet closely linked, worlds: Japanese and Czech culture. The central part of the publication consists of reproductions of Geislers calligraphy, complemented by an insightful text by the distinguished Japanologist Helena Honcoopov, curatorial and personal contributions, and his own photographs from Japan. It is therefore more than an exhibition catalogue: it is an independent space where writing, image, expertise and personal memories meet, while calligraphy remains an expression of inner attitude and the need to create. The contents are in Czech.
