This Czech-language edition of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus, first published in 1818, tells the story of the young scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates an artificial human being: an ugly monster with superhuman strength. The novel combines elements of Gothic and Romantic fiction, including the suffering caused by the loneliness of both its human protagonists and the monster. It raises the question of how responsible a creator is for what he creates and serves, to some extent, as a warning about the consequences of scientific experiments and modern humanitys selfish focus during the Industrial Revolution. These ideas are contrasted with the altruistic and noble actions of ordinary people. A classic of the horror genre, the novel has been adapted many times and has influenced literature and popular culture across genres, inspiring numerous horror stories and films. In contemporary popular culture, Frankenstein is often used to refer to the monster itself, or to an unattractive person or creature.
