This Czech-language novel by Miloslav vandrlk is a classic humorous depiction of the absurd everyday realities of an extraordinary period of post-war Czechoslovak-Soviet friendship, particularly as experienced by conscripts serving in the Technical Battalions. Drawing on the authors own military service in 19531955 at Technical Battalion workplaces in western and southern Bohemia, it presents the lives of the so-called PTP soldiers in a vivid and distinctive style. This fourth edition from Nakladatelstv Epocha includes all the original colour illustrations drawn specifically for the book by Master Neprakta. The first 17 chapters were published in 1969, while the stories of the second part circulated for the next twenty years only by word of mouth or through copied manuscripts; the complete edition appeared in 1990 after the political changes. The novel was adapted into a 1992 film directed by Zdenk Sirov and a Czech Television series broadcast in 2004, based on both parts and supplemented with stories from kali mu Terazky and Pt sekyr poruka Hamka.
