This study briefly outlines the concept of language and understanding in Heideggers Being and Time before examining how early Heidegger is received today by American normative pragmatism, including the work of Dreyfus, Brandom and Crowell. The problematic points of this reception reveal a broader distinction between philosophies of language and communication and a philosophy of understanding, which connects speech and the linguistic character of experience with the temporality and situatedness of human existence. The study seeks to capture this difference, which has kept much modern philosophical discussion on divergent paths, through a deeper concept of understanding. Its guiding principle is an attempt to clarify and make new use of the widely accepted but insufficiently examined distinction between language and speech. Only within the sphere of speech, it argues, can we show that speaking about something means not only sharing meanings, but also being in the world with and against others. The contents are in Czech.
