It recalls what could be bought in a confectioners shop for two crowns, how much Lee Cooper jeans cost in Tuzex vouchers, what teenagers longed for, and what counted as embarrassing, while songs by Korn and Vondrkov, school grades and first dates all become part of growing up. The diary works as a time machine to an era when the Rubiks Cube was a hot new craze and trips to Balaton or shopping in East Germany were ultimate ambitions. Authentic entries, period photographs and newspaper clippings document everyday life in the 1970s and 1980s. The author, now a school inspector, already recorded her childhood with the same attention to detail, noting who was absent from class, what grades everyone received and which boy she was in love with.
