In 2012, a bus carrying children from an Arab kindergarten crashed in the occupied part of Jerusalem. Six children and one teacher burned to death, while many others were injured. Nathan Thrall closely examines the immediate circumstances of the accident, the individual lives of those involved and the children’s relatives, and the broader historical, social and political context. In particular, he explores the extremely difficult conditions faced by Palestinians under Israeli occupation, segregation and extensive bureaucratic restrictions, as well as the realities of permanent conflict and mutual hatred. The book won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction. Nathan Thrall is an American writer of Jewish origin who lives in Jerusalem. His book became an international bestseller and has been translated into more than twenty languages. Publications including The New Yorker, The Economist and Time named it one of the best books of the year. Thrall also wrote the acclaimed essay collection The Only Language They Understand. His writing appears in the London Review of Books, The Guardian, The New York Times Magazine and The New York Review of Books, and has been cited at the UN Security Council, General Assembly and Human Rights Council. He worked for ten years at the International Crisis Group, where he directed the Arab-Israeli project, and taught at Bard College.
