This biography tells the life of Saint Benedict Joseph Labre, patron saint of people without homes. Born the eldest son of a farming family in northern France, he rejected his right to the family farm and longed to enter the strictest monastery. Because of his physical and mental fragility, however, he never settled within monastic walls. He gave everything to God, yet his deepest wish remained unfulfilled, so he set out on the road as a pilgrim, carrying his renunciation with him. His extreme asceticism included rain in the Apennine valleys, parasites beneath his clothing, repeated stonings by youths in Rome, and meals of unpeeled oranges and stale bread. In time, people began to recognize Benedict’s holiness. Despite his repulsive appearance, he healed, saw into people’s hearts and seemed to shine. This little-known saint did not speak much, but through him, God spoke.
