This Czech-language crime novel presents Commissioner Dupins thirteenth case. A Parisian native, coffee-and-penguin lover, and reluctant resident of Brittany, Dupin is sent to the remote island of Ouessant to investigate a mysterious death. The sea has washed ashore the body of a Celtic musician, and police discover a message in his house linked to an ancient dark ritual. His investigation is complicated by a conspiratorial community of islanders known as the Sirens, priestesses and storytellers who live beyond societys norms and understand that appearances matter. Dupin faces an almost impossible task: discovering what those appearances might conceal.
