This atmospheric novel connects a family secret with a search for the truth and the pursuit of a new beginning. At its centre is Scarlett Fontaine, a Hollywood legend, singer, actress and fashion icon who dies tragically at just thirty-six. The official story says she dies childless, but certain clues suggest that the famous womans past contains a wholly unexpected chapter. Gwen Hollingsworth, curator of a museum dedicated to Scarletts life, is struggling with the painful collapse of her marriage and uncertainty about what comes next. When photographer and biographer Peter Miller arrives at the museum with the shocking claim that Scarlett may have spent some time in exile in Alaska and perhaps secretly given birth to a child there, Gwens carefully constructed world begins to fall apart. Together, they travel from the vineyards of Nova Scotia to the rugged Alaskan landscape, where forgotten letters, memories and traces of that lost year gradually reveal the truth. Told across two timelines, the story is framed by the historic disaster of the 1964 Alaska earthquake, which gives it urgency and emotional force.
