As the daughter and granddaughter of prominent Manhattan lawyers, Meredith McKenzie is destined to have only the best. She attends elite schools, moves in select circles and is naturally expected to make a prestigious marriage. She spends her childhood in Germany, where her father serves as a prosecutor during the Nuremberg Trials. As a result, Meredith gradually realises that the struggle between good and evil does not belong only in fairy tales but takes place in the real world. After returning to the United States, she tries to establish herself as a lawyer and follow her own path. She rejects the traditional role of an obedient daughter, and when her father becomes a member of the Supreme Court, she becomes involved in cases defending human rights and seeking to end the Vietnam War. Against the backdrop of important moments in American history, Meredith becomes a confident and strong woman determined to forge her own way despite turbulent times, social prejudice and family losses.
