This unabridged Czech audiobook tells the fascinating story of the Lw-Beer familys survival and return to the places from which they came. It follows two successive escapes from a Jewish ghetto to the free world and traces the journey of the Lw-Beer name. The first escape began in 1848, when Jews started building a promised land in the heart of Europe that allowed them to lead a modern way of life. They could not remain there, however, and in 1938 were sent back to ghettos as the Nazis destroyed their culture. The family factory in Brnnec was later seized and became Schindlers Ark, a concentration camp where Jews were saved rather than killed, as portrayed in Steven Spielbergs Oscar-winning film Schindlers List. The Lw-Beers followed the instinct passed down to them by Noah, cut themselves off from their roots and embarked on a second escape. This dark chapter of the Second World War contrasts with the bright years symbolized by their familys Villa Tugendhat, rising above the centre of Brno as a pinnacle of European architecture. Daniel Low-Beer, a poet, writer and epidemiologist working for the World Health Organization in Geneva, is the grandson of the factorys last Jewish owner.
