Set in the second half of the 19th century, this novel tells the stories of leading members of one of the first Czech womens associations, founded in 1865 at the initiative of the patriot, traveller and generous patron Vojtch Nprstek. He was inspired by the modern way of life he encountered during his stay in America. The clubs co-founders included Karolina Svtl, Sofie Podlipsk and Marie, the daughter of Frantiek Palack. Against the background of this exceptional era, the novel presents the compelling lives of women in Czech cultural circles and portrays their personal dramas. It also explores Nprsteks remarkable family, especially his devoted mother Anna, who rose from poverty to become one of the wealthiest women of her time and whose home, U Halnk, served as the clubs meeting place. The contents are in Czech.
