AliceS Adventures In Wonderland & Through The Looking Glass Carroll Lewis (2009)

This paperback edition includes Alices Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, with the famous illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, plus an introduction and notes by Michael Irwin, Professor of English Literature at the University of Kent at Canterbury. These are among the greatest books ever written for children, their simple language, dreamlike atmosphere and fantastical characters continuing to appeal to young readers. At the same time, the apparently simple stories are recognised as adult masterpieces and extraordinary experiments, years ahead of their time, in Modernism and Surrealism. Through wordplay, parody, and logical and philosophical puzzles, Carroll creates teasing, ominous, and melancholy subtexts. Beneath the playful surface, meaning is everywhere, while the author reveals himself only in glimpses.
