Abroad in Japan: The No. 1 Sunday Times Bestseller Broad Chris (2023)

When Englishman Chris Broad arrives in a rural village in northern Japan, he has no knowledge of the language and no teaching experience, and wonders whether he has made a serious mistake. This memoir charts a decade of living abroad and the chaos and cultural clashes that come with it, taking readers across all 47 prefectures, from lush rice fields and the renewal of Tohoku to Tokyos frenetic neon-lit streets. Along the way, Broad encounters a terrifying North Korean missile incident, a mortifying experience at a love hotel, far too many cats, pizza with Ken Watanabe, and a week spent with Japans biggest movie star. The result is a funny and informative journey through one of the worlds most complex cultures.
