A Terrible Kindness Browning Wroe Jo (2022)

Tonight, nineteen-year-old William Lavery is dressed for success at his first black-tie event, the Midlands Chapter of the Institute of Embalmers Ladies Night Dinner Dance, where he is accompanying Gloria in her sequined evening gown. As the guests drink and smoke after dinner, a telegram brings news of a tragedy that will shake the nation. It is October 1966, and a landslide at a coal mine has buried a school in Aberfan. William decides to volunteer, unaware that this first job will threaten to sacrifice his own happiness. His work that night forces him to confront the little boy he once was and the losses he has worked hard to bury. Yet compassion can have unexpected consequences, because giving so much to others may sometimes help us heal ourselves.
